You might think that if you need drainage solutions, it would be horribly obvious. In some cases, that might be true, but certain problems you may just think are normal can actually be signs that you need the drainage relief that can be brought from a French drain.
What is a French Drain?
There are a small handful of drain types, but they all serve the grand purpose of ferrying water away from areas where there is excess. Essentially water enters a gravel-filled ditch, and trickles down the gravel into a perforated pipe. The pipe then ferries the water away to a safe dump site.
A French drain, once installed, essentially solves water problems in a yard. However, you need to know if you do have water problems around your home first.
Signs You Could Use a French Drain
If you aren’t sure if you need this type of drain, ask yourself if any of these issues apply to you.
You Have Basement Water
French drains aren’t just for yard drainage, they are used to protect your home as well. If you have a frequently waterlogged basement, a French drain can help. It can also protect your foundation from problems that are coming if you have water already leaking into your basement.
Puddling
If you have puddles in your yard or around your foundation, that is a problem. What a puddle means is that your soil cannot absorb any more water. Essentially, it means you have a drainage problem and French drains fix drainage problems.
Soggy Yard
If you walk on your grass and it is damp like a swamp, it has a drainage problem. Enough rain and your grass will start to look press shabby. If your yard can’t drain very well due to low spots or a poor grading, a French drain can be a solution.
You are Installing a Retaining Wall
If you are installing a retaining wall to prevent erosion and provide support, you will want to install a French drain with it. This will prevent water from running back towards your home or building up at the bottom of the wall.
